Social Media Presentations

A few weeks ago our Emerging Technologies class did presentations for a variety of social media sites. I feel that each of the presentations was insightful and useful. The following is a breakdown of the sites that was presented during our class.

Instagram (Jay Carr):  Jay did a great job with his presentation on Instagram. Jay did state in his presentation that it has become a very popular social media app among the youth.  He also explained that it makes sharing photos easier for mobile devices.

Patients Like Me (Jemeikka Steele):  Jemeikka did a through presentation with this site.  I had never heard of this site before this presentation, but having a child with multiple medical issues I feel that it would be a great tool for families who are going through medical issues. Jemeikka’s presentation was insightful and she gave a lot of helpful information for using this site.

Google+ (Trevon Collins):  Trevon’s presentation for this site explained how useful Google+ could be but also showed how this site stores its user’s personal information. He also showed that the controls could be difficult to set up.

SlideShare (Jordan Dees):  Jordan’s presentation on SlideShare gave some great information that could be a useful tool for teachers as well as students that would like to have a place to store their PowerPoint presentations or to share them.

Twitter (Armoni Parker): I feel that Armoni provided a fair presentation of Twitter and how people use it to keep up with others. I do believe from his presentation that maybe it is geared towards the younger generation.

Facebook (David Carr):  David did a great job presenting Facebook and showed that it is one of the most influential social media sites out there and both young and old use it. We also learned that many people use it as a resource to locate job opportunities.

MeetUp (Brayan Meza): This is one site that I have heard of many times but knew very little about it. Brayan did a great job presenting this site. He explained how this is useful for large events and keeping up with time and location changes.

Pinterest (Cicero Johnson):  This is one site that I do enjoy very much and have an account. Cicero gave a great presentation on Pinterest and its many great uses. I think that he gave a great representation of the site and the ways that people uses it for projects, recipes and just get ideas.

Path (Allyson Kennedy): I have never heard of this site before Allyson’s presentation. I was amazed at how similar it is to Face Book. Allyson did a great job with what I feel was the most difficult of presentations that had to be done. She showed how it was used and also that not many people used the site.

Delicious verses Google

After using Delicious for about a week or so I do like it but am not totally convinced that it is better than Google. I feel that Google is better than Delicious most of the time. I did  find 2 maybe 3 of the same links on both pages. Maybe I will continue to use Delicious for a while longer to give it a chance to impress me.

How Companies use RSS

http://www.simply-communicate.com/case-studies/company-profile/how-motorola-uses-social-media-manage-information-overload

Motorola uses multiple methods with communicating with it employees. The company found that employees was spending to much time with email and some even went unread. A study was done to show that by using RSS and other methods the company information reached employees better. The study also showed that employees was open to the idea of using other methods other than email for receiving information.

Chapter 3 Feed Reader

Okay now that I have used feed reader for almost a week now I will say that it is much better than news blur which is what I had originally  started using. I think that feed reader is much easier to use that news blur. I do use it daily and enjoy it. My best advice to anyone who has never used a feeder before is to use the feed reader. This feed reader is user friendly and one of the more simpler ones out there.

Google Reader Chapter 3

I went to Google to download Google reader and learned that it no longer existed. Google did give a list of alternatives and gave instructions on how to convert your Google reader over to the new reader. I found that some benefits was that it gave you your news feeds on your home page which made it easier to read your favorite news stories with out having to search them out. By having the entire list on your home page you could also access from any desktop or laptop at your convenience. Some draw backs would be that not all of the sites that I used I could not get loaded with the reader and now that Google reader is closed if you want what they consider their premium service you have to pay for it.

Both Blogger and Word Press are blogs in which people can post to them. Here are some differences between the two sites. Blogger is exclusive to Google where as Word Press is a publishing site and more like a community.  Blogger will not cost you any money but using WordPress may cost some money at some time.
